A BABY FOR CHRISTMAS?
Tiffany Lawson promised herself that she would never, ever give her heart to a man again. Now she's a pregnant former rodeo queen and ex-debutante struggling to support her mother and grandmother. She's already picked out the perfect adoptive parents, but cowboy Navy SEAL Rowdy Jones isn't letting anyone take his child. Rowdy loves the rush that comes from being a Navy SEAL, but finding out he's about to become a dad? That trumps everything. While he and Tiffany shared only one night, Rowdy's determined to do right by her and their baby. His next mission—to win Tiffany and keep his son—might be his toughest yet…
I applaud the author for writing a story around a difficult and sensitive topic - giving a baby for adoption after a one-night stand with a stranger ends up in pregnancy. Rarely is this seen in romance novels even as an option, not to mention a serious consideration, as Tiffany was ready to give the baby for a loving home to be raised before Rowdy found out about the baby.
And the plot itself is well thought out, I think this could have been a great story indeed, I just had a little problem with the characters, or more likely how they were presented. Every single person in the tale was the caricature of their stereotype. And I am thinking this might have been meant to humorous but I was mostly embarrassed while reading, not knowing what to think about them. Tiffany's dreams and hopes for her future were centered around a perfect manicure, and Rowdy, well he didn't come off as the sharpest knife in the toolbox. Even the secondary characters were a parody of the worst possible stereotype. Tiffany and Rowdy with their constant fighting and sparring with each other and about the matter of adoption and future was tiresome, so that instead of being sensitive and deeply felt story, it ended up being a satire of cowboy and a debutante. Obviously, I didn't connect with the writing style, or the sense of humor, or at least with the characters. Maybe my expectations were off. And I do admit, the caricatures were well done, so most likely someone else will find them hilarious while I felt awkward. But since the storyline was fresh and original, that I am ready to give ~ Three Spoons
