Semper Paratus. Always ready.

Years ago, Coast Guard rescue swimmer Dylan Holt left Kodiak, Alaska, with his heart in pieces. He thought Nolee Arnauyq and her mouthwatering curves were behind him--until he's sent to rescue the crew of a capsizing boat...including Nolee. And Dylan is definitely not ready for the too-familiar way his body aches at seeing her again.

Nolee's always gone after what she wanted, and to hell with the risks. Now she's a rookie ship captain taking on the deadly waters of the Bering Sea. But out on these treacherous waters, there's no way to avoid the sizzling sexual tension between them--or the dangerous pull of emotions that could leave both their hearts lost at sea...

A story filled with action, danger, and lessons in life while trying to heal from the childhood wounds and find the way to each other's arms and hearts again.
An adrenaline filled second chance romance that starts with an alarming and intense fight against the stormy seas, where lives are on the line and careers are about to sink to the endless void of the ocean. It had my heart rate up and I was nearly blubbering for them to hurry up and save themselves. With this perilous scene, I got an immediate emotional connection to the characters and I was hooked. The whole story unfolded in my mind in a movie-like manner, with icy winds and rolling seas behind most of the settings.
Nolee Arnauyq was one kick-ass heroine. She had survived her emotionally withdrawn mother and a father who abandoned her before she was born. Her childhood was spent on relying on the charity of their relatives, eating and sleeping when someone noticed her need. Now the captain of the boat, finally fulfilling her life's dream, she was determined to make this happen, just this one thing to go her way. She is filled with passion and fire, stubborn to the core. But her loyalty and commitment are above the bar.
Dylan Holt was back where he promised he would never return, just to find out that nothing seems to be as he saw it with the wounded mind of a teenage boy ten years ago. His spirit was nearly crushed by his father, his heart broken by Nolee, yet there might be a way to heal the broken and mend the wounds once left bleeding. His strength and respectful mind guiding him, he just might find a way back home.
I enjoyed Dylan and Nolee together, their trust for each other was unwavering as they worked side by side. There were scorching passion and fire that fueled the attraction. The old, buried, tender feelings were coming alive as the truth of the past comes to light and they have a chance to get to know each other as a woman and a man they have grown to be. There were laughter, smiles, and sighs as they melee forward, they were just a delight!
I love it when a story is not only entertaining, fun and sizzling hot, but it has life lessons and thoughts that make you stop and think for a moment, and reflect on them. His Last Defense took me for a wild, stormy ride, and I enjoyed every moment of it!

Award-winning author Karen Rock is both sweet and spicy—at least when it comes to her writing! The author of both YA and adult contemporary books writes red-hot novels for Harlequin Blaze and small-town romances for Harlequin Heartwarming. A strong believer in Happily-Ever-After, Karen loves creating unforgettable stories that leave her readers with a smile. She enjoys returning to her teaching roots when speaking at regional and national writing conferences and interacting with other writers. She has a Master of Fine Arts in English and has continued to learn and grow professionally through her work with YA co-author, fellow romance author, friend and sister-in-law, Joanne Rock. When she’s not writing, Karen is an avid reader who’s typically immersed in three different books at a time, all in different genres. She also loves cooking her grandmother’s Italian recipes, baking, Christmas (no need to specify—she loves every bit of it), and having the Adirondack Park wilderness as her backyard, where she lives with her husband, daughter, dog and cat who keep her life interesting and complete.
