Life's Defeat
Life's Series Book 1
by Rebekah Raymond
Genre: Romantic Suspense, Futuristic
Tragedy places the soldier in StPatrick’s complex, determination to be someone of use keeps her within its walls. When she finally takes her first breaths of freedom, the soldier is sucked back into military servitude. Her long, violent capture and imprisonment by Rochester sets her path of physical and psychological terror.
Under his rule she learns the depth of her own depravity, and how far she can go before she threatens to lose herself. But when Tomlin and his team rescues her, she discovers a new threat in the life she chooses to lead.
As the pages of her genetically-altered history are revealed, the solider finds the key to achieving her new goal: revenge.
It’s unfortunate it might just kill her in the end.
He considered my flesh, running his fingertips down the length of my thigh as he nodded and tapped my flank just below one of my tribal tattoos. I saw him lift his cigar to his lips, puffing a few times, then watched him lower the cigar to the item he held. Within seconds, the tip was red. My eyes grew large as I realized what it was.
"Only for a moment," Rochester re-emphasized as he brought the small trinket to my thigh, meeting my gaze with his filled with enjoyment. I screamed as the brand dug into my fat, cooking the skin and membranes below. My body convulsed, my muscles twitching and fighting despite the increasing tightness of the muscular man’s hold on me. I broke out into a cold sweat, muscles quivering from pain, my mouth tasting bile as I held back sickness. Finally Rochester took the brand away, tearing skin as it lifted off. He lowered his head to below where I could see him and I could feel his warm breath as he blew on the mark. I stiffened in response, the area smarting. I could already feel the slow continuation of heat as the burn sensation spread.
Life's Hope
Life's Series Book 2
With the resolve of a child who had grown too much to return home, Seleah stayed away from StPatrick's complex for twelve years after her devastating abduction and rescue from criminal mastermind Rochester’s clutches. When her former lover and friend, Tomlin, calls with the news of her beloved mentor's demise, however, she decides to come back to the school and her course is altered dramatically.
Tomlin can’t stand being away from Seleah any longer. He wants her, needs her to return for good. His stupidity was almost his downfall. Now, life has given him a second chance.
But with their reunion comes jealousy and hatred from an outside source, threatening to kill them both and the new life they are seeking.
The pair must learn to accept each other once more; to heal wounds and scars alike, and decide if their paths can really exist together forever. Passion, sadness, violence, and the resiliency of love await in Life’s Hope.
I pulled away, knowing if I didn't we would end up in a compromising situation. On the other hand, pulling the woman back into the pitch black hall and making love to her until she cried out my name did have a certain appeal. I shook my head as I dismissed the idea, watching Seleah’s face flush. I had forgotten that she, like StPatrick, possessed the talent of reading ones intentions. It was much more revealing than most people knew.
She inclined her head, “Another time?” I nodded and closed the panel, watching her from the darkness. Her words held a promise that I hoped was true. Now that I had regained a taste of her, my Seleah was like a drug, coursing through my veins, a disease, ravaging my every thought and making my body tingle. That my mind only came up with negative comparisons I was well aware. I just couldn't be sure yet if that was a good thing or not.

An addiction counselor & a security guard struggle to free a little girl and her father—lost spirits trapped inside an abandoned mental asylum.
Laura Horton returns from college to move in with an old friend & start her career. But her homecoming is jarring. Her friend’s moved out, leaving Laura alone with the gorgeous but intimidating ex-boyfriend—in a house that snugs up to an ancient graveyard. Officer Miller Stanford is a man with a shattered past. His alcoholic dad destroyed their family, a weakness Miller is terrified will consume him too. The last thing he needs is a sexy, blonde addiction counselor watching his every move. When he begins to see specters in the dark, he starts questioning his own stability. But Laura sees her too—a pathetic child-spirit searching for her father. Can they unravel the mysteries of Talcott Hall without jeopardizing their love—and lives—in the process?
The set-up for the novel is intriguing with the surprise roommates, the personal struggles both of the protagonist are dealing with, and the hunted environment where they live and work - the unexplainable instances with lights, voices, and people appearing.
Both Laura Horton and Miller Stanford lives have turned into a mess. They both have baggage from the teenage years that they have not dealt with, that affect their everyday life still to the day. Their current lives are not much better, from living situation to their careers to their families everything seems to be in upheaval or a problem. When the stress from their lives are at the highest point, the unexplainable appearances of noises, voices, lights, and people could not be more distracting and fearful, mostly fearing for their sanity. The story is an interesting mix of genres. There is the Young Adult part where Laura is trying to start her life after school, find her place in her career, still looking for what, where, and how she is going to move on now that her life can truly start. Miller is also looking for a new chance with his career and continuing education. Then there is the Women's Lit part that tells the journey of the protagonist and their families, the growth and the development of the characters, their relationships with their families, and their relationship with each other. And then the touch of paranormal with the haunted grounds and houses where the main characters try to find help for the lost souls. The story started a bit slow for me, it took to the half part of the book to set up the scene. I am glad I didn't give up on the story because when it picks up the tempo and the flow, it delivers a riveting and alluring tale of redemption. The characters get a chance to show their true colors, the people they grew up to be. The maturation of Miller and Laura is evident and a rather beautiful thing to witness, as well as the progress of their relationship. A thought-provoking and a puzzling story about life both here on earth and there on ever after. ~ Four Spoons

I Knew You Were Trouble
Oxford #4 By: Lauren Layne Releasing June 13, 2017 Loveswept
New York City’s hottest bachelors are stirring up trouble in this fun, flirty Oxford Novel, as a love triangle forces a feisty beauty to choose between winning back Mr. Right or giving in to Mr. Wrong.
Taylor Carr has it all—a sleek job in advertising, a stunning Manhattan apartment, and the perfect man to share it with: Bradley Calloway. Even after Bradley dumps her for a co-worker on move-in day, Taylor isn’t worried. She’ll get her man eventually. In the meantime, she needs a new roommate. Enter Nick Ballantine, career bartender, freelance writer—and longtime pain in Taylor’s ass. Sexy in a permanent five-o’clock-shadow kind of way, Nick knows how to push Taylor’s buttons, as if he could see right through to the real her. Nick’s always trying to fix people, and nobody could use a good fixing more than Taylor. Sure, she’s gorgeous, with mesmerizing silver eyes, but it’s her vulnerability that kills him. Now that they’re shacking up together, the chemistry is out of control. Soon they’re putting every part of their two-bedroom apartment to good use. Then Taylor’s ex comes crawling back to her, and Nick figures she’ll jump at the chance to go back to her old life—unless he fights for the best thing that ever happened to him.
Bradley froze when he saw her, and she was pretty sure she saw the urge to turn and run flicker across his face.
Again she felt a stab of disappointment. In him. And in herself for apparently having misread him. She’d thought he was better than this. Bradley’s eyes moved between her and Nick, and though he didn’t look all that surprised at seeing them bickering, his gaze grew hard as he saw Nick’s hand on Taylor’s face. Nick, naturally, took his sweet time removing it, and she resisted the urge to kick his shin. “Morning, Bradley,” Taylor said, pleased that her voice sounded calm and friendly. As well it should. She’d had plenty of practice over the better part of a year pretending that she and Bradley were nothing more than colleagues. Other than a few close friends who knew they were dating, they’d done a mostly decent job of hiding their romantic relationship from coworkers. Better than she and Nick had done hiding their antagonistic one. “Hey, Taylor. Nick,” Bradley said. He entered the room and reached for a coffee mug, turning his attention toward the other man. “Didn’t realize you’d taken on another assignment. What for?” “Not sure,” Nick said, checking his watch. “Have a meeting with Cassidy in a few to find out.” “Here’s hoping it’s an offsite gig that takes you far, far away. Maybe he needs someone to cover Siberian winters,” Taylor said to Nick, even as she watched Bradley out of the corner of her eye. “Don’t need to travel to find severe winter. It doesn’t get any chillier than right here,” Nick retorted, waving his hand over her head in a storm cloud gesture. She shoved his hand aside, her attention still on Bradley, who was determinedly avoiding her gaze. Coward. It was going to be darn hard to get him to see reason when he wouldn’t even make eye contact. Nick, ever too perceptive for his own good, noticed the tension and gave a quick look between her and Bradley, his gaze turning speculative. She shot him a warning look that clearly said, Don’t. He shot an answering smile that clearly said, Watch me. “Bradley, don’t suppose you’re in the market for a roommate?” Nick asked, his voice deceptively casual. Bradley’s head snapped up, and finally, finally his blue gaze collided with Taylor’s. Dammit. Why did he have to be so beautiful? He was like a mischievous angel, all twinkling blue eyes, dimples, a sexy cleft in his chin, dark blond wavy hair . . . “What?” he asked Nick distractedly, still looking at Taylor. “Taylor here wants to share her original crown molding with someone.” Bradley winced, and Taylor felt a little surge of gratitude toward Nick. He couldn’t have known it, but it was the perfect jab. She and Bradley were both into prewar architecture—had eaten up the broker’s description of all the building’s original elements. Taylor should be sharing that crown molding with Bradley. And he damn well knew it. His eyes met hers in silent misery—an apology that she wasn’t quite ready to accept. Heck, she wasn’t even ready to acknowledge it, because she had no intention of being dumped. Not by him, not by any man. Taylor ignored the guilt written all over Bradley’s face as she held his gaze. “Yes, it seems I unexpectedly have a free bedroom and more rent than I can afford. If either of you knows anyone looking for a roommate . . .” Bradley’s handsome face twisted regretfully, and he set his coffee aside, taking a step toward her, apparently forgetting—or not caring—that Nick was still in the room. “Taylor. Damn it. I told you—” “Actually, I do,” Nick said, interrupting. Taylor forced her gaze away from Bradley’s pleading face toward Nick’s smug one. “You know someone who needs a roommate?” “Yup.” He crossed his arms and watched her. She made an impatient gesture with her hand. “Who? It can’t be one of your ex-girlfriends—I don’t want to inadvertently hear any gross details about you. And not one of your frat-boy guy friends—my living room isn’t cut out for Call of Duty.” “Yeah, because that’s all I do all day.” She rolled her eyes. “Okay, for real, who is it?” His grin was slow, sly, and the very definition of trouble. “Me.”

TALEN
by Rebecca Zanetti
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Pub Date: 6/6/17
She’ll love him forever . . . but he can’t make her obey . . .
The war is over. Danger has passed. Cara Kayrs is healed after decades of illness and ready for a break.
Too bad her brooding, alpha vampire husband can’t seem to change gears. In their twenty-five years together Talen Kayrs has learned to sense every shiver of her body, to ignite her desire with a word or a look. She would think he could learn she’s not some fragile damsel in distress.
But Talen is on edge, watching their backs, treating her like she’s made of glass. Like there’s something following them, a deadly threat that somehow none of their intelligence has uncovered. It’s enough to drive a woman crazy, and Talen has plenty of those tendencies already.
But what’s even more maddening is that he seems to be right . . .
“I was fairly certain I tamed you way back when,”
he said thoughtfully. Red infused her face. “I’m about to kick your ass, Kayrs.” Maybe not. Interesting. At the thought, his entire body tightened, and his cock started to throb. “Cara.” Her shiver enticed him. “What?” “I strongly advise you not to push me.” It was only fair to warn her, and he went on instinct. After nearly dying when the war had ended, he’d been restless since. For so many years, he’d treated his mate with more gentleness than he would’ve thought possible as she’d endured the virus. Now that she was healthy, a primal part of him, one much closer to the surface than he liked, wanted to claim her again with all the dominance that was inherent to his species. “Okay?” She breathed out. “Oh, mate. You’re the one who needs to stop pushing.” Talen couldn’t shake the itch between his shoulder blades. Taking his mate from the safety of their headquarters didn’t set well with him, and his muscles tensed in one long line. “Would you relax?” she whispered from the passenger seat, her head back on the leather and her eyes closed in pleased abandonment. Her legs were up on the dash, her feet in little sandals that showed off bright pink toenails. Sexy and pink. Her long auburn hair cascaded over her shoulders, and he fought the urge to tug on a strand. The woman was right. The war had ended, and he really did need to relax. He watched the road outside and yet kept a close eye on his woman out of his peripheral vision. “It occurs to me that you think things have changed.” She opened her eyelids then . . . her eyes a stunning blue. “Huh?” He cleared his throat and made sure her seat belt was firmly around her small body. “The war is over, you’re well, and you think things are different.” In fact, his woman hadn’t been healthy since right after they’d mated, and for years, he’d been more than gentle with her. At the thought that she was whole, finally, his heart started to thrum. “Of course things are different.” She gestured out with one arm. “We’re on a road trip, without guards, without death hanging over our heads.” Her laugh was throaty and full. “Emma and I are taking a Vegas trip next month for a girls’ weekend.” “Absolutely not.” She gaped. “I did not ask permission, Kayrs.” He bit back a wince. Whenever Cara used his last name, he was about to end up in the doghouse. Yet she was no longer vulnerable or weak, and he was finished placating her. “Mate? I have no intention of allowing you to go anywhere for a girls’ anything.” The second the word allow was out of his mouth, the tension in the car ratcheted up several degrees. “Oh, you did not,” she sputtered, her eyes narrowing. He sighed and turned to pin her with a look. He’d forgotten her stubbornness in the last difficult years when she’d been fighting a deadly virus that had almost taken her life. Now that she was healthy, memories of their first months together, before she had become infected, filtered through his mind. “I was fairly certain I tamed you way back when,” he said thoughtfully. “Oh, mate. You’re the one who needs to stop pushing.” He reached out, catching the long strands of her hair before she could avoid him. Her eyes widened, and he twisted his wrist with enough pressure to tilt back her head, fighting instincts he’d forgotten he had. Curiosity and desire spilled from her. His nostrils flared, catching his mate’s scent. It had been too long since they’d both been whole and healthy. He’d forgotten her defiant nature and how much she liked to challenge him. “Maybe this trip was a good idea,” he said softly, the beast inside him raging as her lids half-lowered.

Her kisses, her body, her moans, drive me crazy. I can’t seem to say no to her.
My only problem is, that she doesn’t seem to be interested in more than my body.
And I’m not about to have my control taken away from me.
She either bends to my will, or I’m walking.
Grayson Carter is everything I ever dreamed of and more.
He’s built like a rock and knows how to satisfy my every need.
But the last thing I want is to have another failed relationship.
Especially, when it involves a member of the Hell’s Lovers.
I’m the one in control, I’m always in control…
So why is it that Grayson Carter is the only man who has ever made me beg for more.
It was late when I entered my apartment. I sank down on the couch and stared out into the city. I lived in a high rise in downtown L.A., it offered a good view and it was near the club, I also owned the building. I had a few investments, mostly in stocks, so I did well for myself. I didn’t really have any family or anyone I truly cared about, except for Wolf and most recently, Scarlett. I used to do security for the military, and after retiring, Wolf gave me a place to stay and opened his doors for me. I was glad to have someone like Wolf. He’d been a good friend throughout the years. When he took over as President, he immediately named me VP, and it’s been that way for the last five years. The brotherhood was my refuge and although we didn’t voice it, we were a pretty tight knit family. I stood up and went to grab a beer. I headed down the hall to my bedroom, where an empty bed awaited me. Usually it didn’t bother me, but lately I’d been yearning for a warm body to press up against. Specifically, a voluptuous blonde, with eyes the color of emeralds. My cock stirred and I sighed as I took a swig of my beer and sat at the edge of the bed. Images of Rahyne spread out on my mattress kept flooding through my mind and they had been non-stop lately. It didn’t matter where I was or who I was with, I couldn’t get the temptress out of my head. It was starting to worry me. I never even thought of settling down. I lived my life peacefully, went where I wanted, fucked who I wanted, and didn’t give a shit about anything. But with Rahyne...fuck, I thought my urgency to have her was just an infatuation-something that would go away in a matter of weeks. Six months later, and my body still craved hers, more now than ever before. Running my hands through my hair I fought my desire to go looking for her and I gulped down my beer. Lying back on the bed I let her image envelop me and I pulled out my shaft-hard as a rock as usual-and stroked myself, remembering the sound of her sweet whispers, and the moans and whimpers I heard on an almost daily basis. I groaned, imagining the wonderful feeling of her tight pussy hugging my swollen member. Remembering the way she shouted my name, and how her body gripped me, made me jerk off harder. Knowing I could manipulate her body to such extremes had me grunting my release as streams of white fluid leapt out and landed on my stomach. I breathed out and splayed my arms on the mattress. Closing my eyes, I imagined her by my side, and the only thought that came to my mind, before I drifted off, was that I was going to make her mine.
Wolf
A Hell's Lovers MC Romance #1
Scarlett Chase is every man’s wet dream.
As soon as I laid eyes on her, I knew she’d be mine.
That is, until I found out she was untouchable.
One kiss, one forbidden touch, will have me out on the streets and stripped of who I am.
Yet I want her. I need her. And I’m done following all these damn rules.
Wolf Stone is my obsession.
Ever since he pulled over on that empty road, I’ve been tormented by the man.
His possessive words and heated looks have me tightly wound.
One touch, and he lights me on fire.
But I want more.
I not only want him in my bed, I want to keep him for myself.
But he won’t budge, and now it’s up to me to entice his sleeping wolf.
“Wolf.” I breathed, dragging my hands along his tussled hair.
I felt the hot slickness of his tongue lick me from the base of my shoulder up along the curve of my neck. He stopped briefly before nipping my earlobe and I nearly came, right then and there. “You taste so goddamn good.” He whispered. I gripped his hair and whimpered. “Don’t stop, Wolf. Please, don’t stop.” My words seemed to snap him out of his trance and he stepped away from me. I glided down the wall and a feeling of emptiness surrounded me as he moved away. My hands reached for him, but he turned away. I could tell his breathing was labored, and he was just as, or even more affected by this, than I was. I reached out and touched his back and I suddenly found myself pressed once more against the wall. My body arched like a cat in heat, trying to bring every inch of him against me. The movement was futile as he gripped me by the shoulders and half shook me awake from my lust filled moment. “Stop it. Stop, Scarlett. I won’t be able to do this if you don’t stop.” He pressed his forehead against mine and ran his hands down my arms, gripping my hips. His mouth said one thing, but his hands wouldn’t stop touching me. “Stop. Please.” My body stilled at his request, but it remained thrumming alongside his. “Don’t stop, Wolf. Please. Please, don’t do this.” He dragged his rough jaw against my cheek and breathed in. “I can’t. I just can’t.” He squeezed his eyes shut, almost as if it hurt. He waited a few minutes, hid body vibrated against mine, and his hands continued to hold me. “I won’t have you wandering down here. You need to leave.” “What?” I whispered. He gripped my waist tightly. “I want you to leave, Scarlett. You don’t belong here!” I rubbed my hands across the muscles of his chest and his breath hitched. “I don’t want to leave. I want to stay here. With you.” He growled and leaned his body into mine. “Me too, gorgeous. Oh God, me too.”
My name is Crimson Syn, not really, but what fun is it to use my real name. Instead I’ll use my inner goddess’ name, it’s much more fun that way. I grew up in New York City where I had a wonderful education, loving parents and awesome friends. What more could a girl ask for?
I started writing at the age of sixteen. The first romance I read was Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride. Since then I have been influenced by dozens of flourishing romance authors and even more dashing and daring rogues. I must say it, but Fifty Shades was not my first erotic romance, nor did it influence me to start writing them. If you’ve never read Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt, Lisa Kleypas, Bertrice Small or A.N. Roquelaure’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy, then you’re missing out. Those were my sweet introductions to erotic romance, and boy were they hot.
So here I am, after reading so many wonderful stories, I have too many sinful tales of my own not to share. I like my alphas rough and possessive, and I have no shame in saying it or writing it. I had delightfully wicked teachers growing up, their books took me to new worlds and brought me new loves. So, I want to do the same for you. I want to indulge my readers in those steamy reads that will send them into the arms of dangerous alphas and deliciously sexy rogues, without leaving the confines of their nice warm bed. If I am able to entice your inner goddesses, then I have done my job and I am satisfied.

North to You
Journey to the Heart #1 By: Tif Marcelo Releasing June 5, 2017 Pocket Star
Camille Marino has got a full plate. As the sole guardian of her eighteen-year-old sister and the head chef and owner of a food truck, she’s used to life being a juggling act. With food to cook, social media accounts to manage, and a little sister to look after, she doesn’t have time for much else.
That is, until Drew Bautista walks back into her life. Drew is Camille’s former high school crush and he returns to San Francisco to repair his relationship with his father before he ships out for deployment. By helping his father renovate his failing Filipino restaurant, he hopes to win back his respect. But when sparks fly between Drew and Camille—his father’s major competition and sworn enemy—Drew is conflicted. Should he join his father in the war against her food truck? Or surrender to the woman who’s given him a second chance at love?
Above the low hum of the traffic, the people, and the planes passing overhead, a bell chimes. Then two, then three. Soon, surround-sound church bells, signaling the start of the new day, sweep over the breadth of my view.
“Wow.” The music becomes the backdrop of the city I thought I knew. My eyes follow the path of Market Street and the twinkling outline of the Bay Bridge. It scans to the Transamerica Building, which cuts the ombré of the night sky down to the yellow of the city lights. Sights now enhanced, brought to greater depth and meaning. “Right?” he whispers next to me. “Beautiful.” “She is definitely beautiful.” My breath hitches at Drew’s statement. He leans against the barrier, his back to the city lights. His eyes are solely on me. This man and I know nothing about each other as adults except for what we revealed in the last hour. He knows nothing of my dreams and hopes. I don’t understand the life he’s chosen. And yet I’m bound to him with leftover feelings that are so innocent and pure, feelings I’m not sure where to place now that they’ve been pulled from memories packed away. One thing is sure. Right now is perfect. I approach him, place my hands on his chest. He rests his fingers lightly on my waist. “Camille—” I stop him with a kiss. Tonight has been crazy, magical, fuzzy, and weird, and I don’t want to think about consequences, my overloaded plate of responsibilities, of everything waiting for me down there, in the city below.
Describe yourself in five words or less.
Loyal. Dedicated. Empathetic. Enthusiastic. Cheerful. What are 5 things you must have with you when you write? I try not to get into the mindset that I need anything but a pen and paper/computer BUT:
What has been your toughest scene or book to write? The “darkest hour” or also known as “the black moment.” It hurt my heart to bring these characters’ biggest fears to fruition. And then, to somehow recover from it was difficult because I wanted for it to come realistically and organically. What did you enjoy most about writing this book? Oh, hands down, it had to be the research! This book encompassed San Francisco (the city of my child and young adulthood) and food (Filipino food, most especially). I no longer live in San Francisco, so finding another eason to look back at old pictures and to look at maps of the City brought me back! I’ve always been a writer, and my imagination have always run amok. Though I went to college and took up nursing and joined the Army, it never left me. I returned to writing through blogging when my second son was born, and continued to do so for over a decade. I began novel writing about six years ago, and was encouraged by my mother, my husband and closest friends. This journey has brought me full circle! What do you do when you are not writing? I’m a mom of four and a military spouse! Which means not only am I on the go every single day, as a family we are dealing with moving/deploying/temporary assignments quite regularly. Because of this, I practice yoga and run (very slowly). I love to read and binge watch shows I’m always behind on. I also craft! From Bachelor Sheriff to Family Man
Tired of pining for handsome sheriff Ward Gleason, seamstress Hazel Andrews plans to head East for a fresh start—until Ward finds an abandoned child. Hazel can't turn down his request that she watch the little girl while he investigates a spate of crimes. But spending time with Ward is sending local gossips—and Hazel's heart—into turmoil. Nothing in Ward's world is the same since he took charge of orphaned Meg…and that includes his growing feelings for Hazel. A fake engagement will allow them to care for the child together until Hazel moves away and finds someone more worthy. But with little Meg convinced she's already found her forever family, can Ward and Hazel dare to make her dreams come true, along with their own?
An unrequited love for an old friend, a baffling mystery that has the town in the uproar, and a sweet little girl to win the sheriff's heart, and a determined seamstress who knows what she wants.
The Texas Grooms series has proven to be both inspirational and entertaining. Both seamstress Hazel Andrews and Sheriff Ward Gleason have made appearances in the previous books, so I was excited to find about their destiny and road to their happily ever after. Mix in vandalism happening in the town, and a little Meg who is in desperate need of loving and affectionate family, and we have the makings of the story that captivated my mind. Hazel was in love with her good friend's older brother, and the whole town knew about her affections. What a position to be in! Yet Hazel manages herself just fine, she is a kindhearted, smart, stubborn, generous person, she knows her mind, she is not afraid to go after what she wants, and say what she means. Truly a spunky heroine to be admired! Ward lost his heart to little Meg when she was abandoned in a train he was traveling in. Meg adored Ward and the affection, kindness, and encouragement he showered her with. I loved those two together, they had a genuine bond from the first moment. There is a lot happening in the town and in the lives of the protagonist, the story is full packed, maybe a little too much is happening and the development of the relationship was left in the background, as was their faith in God, and relying on Him during the troubles. This felt a bit like an afterthought whenever it was brought up in the tale. The mystery didn't entice me so much as I was just waiting to see how they would figure out the culprit and how long it would take. My interest was to see how Ward, who had known Hazel for a lifetime and was aware of her feelings towards him, would suddenly change his opinion of her, and if his feelings would be authentic and believable. And that left a little bit to be desired, I would have liked to see a bit more about the process of his change of feelings. Regardless, the story had a lot to offer. It was entertaining, mysterious, and gave a good look at the small town living back in the day. The secondary characters enhance the story with their antics, being an important part of the plot development. An enjoyable historical novel with touch mystery and romance ~ Three Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
For Cassie Peterson, finding out her new ranch was the site of a cold case is horrifying. But now one of her cowboys has been murdered, just like the previous victims!
Cassie will do whatever it takes to help Chief of Police Dillon Bowie find the killer, but will getting close to the handsome lawman put more than her home at risk? Dillon's been working hard to crack the original case--and keep feisty Cassie out of his thoughts. But when disturbing new clues prove the murderer is obsessed with Cassie, Dillon will tempt fate to guard the beauty and solve a terrifying mystery.
I have really enjoyed this intense cowboy suspense series from Carla Cassidy. The set up at the ranch is intriguing and admirable. What Cassie's aunt did to save the ranch and save the young men's lives when she took the runaway, street boys to live and work on her land, and helped them grow to be the men they are, is commendable.
The old murder case and all the trouble at the ranch since Cassie inherited it, has created some breathtaking suspense. Now a new hire is found murdered at the ranch and it is starting to look like one if Cassie's men are behind the brutal murders. The tension escalates as the attempts to kill Cassie increase. The threat is palpable and the there are moments when Cassie is fighting - or hiding - for her life, that I was holding my breath, as I could feel the fear and imminent danger. The sparks between Cassie and Chief of Police Dillon Bowie are like fireworks going off. While on the ranch to protect her life, Dillon and Cassie have a chance to get to know each other better. The conversations between them are revealing and engaging, as they share their lives, dreams, and hopes for the future. The attraction between them is tangible, and deeper feelings are taking root, even though they seem to want the opposite with their future. I enjoyed Cassie and Dillon connection, it was authentic and the conflict between them was valid, something they really needed to work out to make it work. The passionate attraction had a dash of sweetness and tenderness in it, that had me swooning. The intense suspense and bursts of action were fierce in itself, but knowing that the culprit most likely is one of the men you have grown to care for, yet you have no idea which one, and they all are still part of your daily life... Yes, toe-curling-scary moments that had me biting my nails. A well-balanced mix of ardent romance and chilling suspense in a story that captured my mind with the charismatic characters and remarkable storytelling. Even though it is a part of series, I believe it can be read as a standalone novel. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

TO SAVE HER CHILD
Arriving home with the baby she's adopting, Caroline Harrison finds her house vandalized...and an intruder intent on shooting her. She's saved when police sirens approach, but all signs point to the little boy as the true target--and the assailant won't give up. Now she has to rely on Detective Jason Drake, the man who once broke her heart, to figure out why someone's after her soon-to-be adoptive son. Reunited after thirteen years apart, Jason can't help but hope their love might be rekindled, but Caroline and her son's safety come first. Because if he wants a chance at a future--and a family--with them, they have to outrun a hit man.
Intense action, intriguing suspense, great character development, sweet and gentle second chance love story, an adorable baby - this story has it all, and does it well!
The characters are multiple and likable, from protagonists to the supporting cast and crew, they have all distinctive characteristics, they are unique, with their strengths and weaknesses, and they all have something about them that made me have a connection with them, understand where they were coming from, and like them all the same. Most of them had personally found salvation in the Lord, and had faith in God, in His guidance in their lives, this was clear to see as they proudly proclaimed it. Caroline Harrison and Jason Drake obviously have a connection. The once wrecked childhood friendship gave them a foundation start building something new, something solid, mature, and lasting. They could not have hidden the feelings they have for each other even if they tried. The past mistakes and hurt were handled without too much angst and drama, there was enough tension, trouble, and danger from the threats and murder attempts against Caroline and her son. The story has an enthralling, compelling tone and tempo, it pulled me right into the story, and held me captive till the end. It has heart-stopping moments of pure fear and devastation, at one point I even questioned if there could be a happy ending and if everyone could make it alive through the disastrous attacks with a murderous intent. A breathtaking, thrilling, and impressive tale on many levels, that will deliver a sincere message of forgiveness, while keeping you entertained with the action and romance ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
NOT A FAMILY MAN…
Mandy Richardson has always wanted a husband and lots of kids. She knows Ben Hartley isn't a forever kind of guy, so she struggles to keep her feelings for him friends only. But she can't help her growing attraction. Then one night their relationship blossoms into more, and soon Mandy discovers she's pregnant. Ben still bears the scars of a painful past—a past that has him avoiding love and commitment. When Mandy tells him he's going to be a dad, he worries he won't measure up. After all, his own father was far from a role model. But he's fallen hard for Mandy, and now it's up to him to prove he's a better man—a stronger man—than he thought.
This is such a charming story with heartfelt, sweet romance, subtle humor that had me laughing out loud, family bonds that go beyond blood, and a tiny house that made me envious!
I enjoyed the first book in the series, the Hartley family has taken a hold of my heart, and this second installation just confirmed it. I love that the Hartley's have adopted five children who needed a home, a family they can count on. And now the kids are grown and the bond is stronger than ever. The tightness of that bond is evident, the love and respect the 'kids' have for their parents is sincere. I love, love, love it when the mom gets all over their business, yet they just hug her and listen to her. Mandy Richardson is a heroine easy to like and relate to. I absolutely adore that she lives in a tiny house, works in the yarn shop, and likes to bike! She is fun, spunky, considerate, kind woman, the kind of person I would love to be friends with. She grew up with her hard-working single mom and her dedication and respect to her mom is evident in everything that she does. Ben Hartley lived his early childhood in a human hell with unfit parents until the Hartley's gave him a forever home. Ben is a solid, trustworthy, fun, kind, and protective man. His childhood has left some deep scars in his mind as well as in his body, scars that have convinced him he is unfit to be in a long term relationship or to father a child. Mandy and Ben truly are perfect together. They klick, they fit, they have fun together. They enjoy each others company, they like each other as well as admire each other, they have chemistry off the charts and the attraction smoldering between them is flammable. They had me laughing with their antics, sighing with the romance, and in tears when the scars from the past start to hurt in the present and causes conflicts in their lives. This alluring, amusing, and delicious romance story with strong family values and charismatic characters was enjoyable and entertaining, touched my emotions, and made me want to spend time in Blue Falls, Texas! ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
One unexpected night…
ED nurse Tamara Washington had everything—until her life was publicly destroyed by her ex. She's hidden herself away ever since, focusing only on her patients. Then one hot night with her boss, Dr. Conor Maguire, upends her world again. With consequences! Now Tamara is pregnant and Conor faces being a father, something he never anticipated. But if they face their fears together, maybe they could become a family, because with Tamara in his arms, anything seems possible…
A sweet and realistic story about unexpected baby news after a one night stand between two coworkers.
I really enjoyed this story because of the different layers to it and the authentic feel to it. The work at the emergency ward brought drama and tension to the tale. They were fighting the good fight to keep everyone alive, help the people they meet the best possible way, and to deal with the relations between the staff at the ward and the hospital in large. It was fascinating and obviously, the author knew what she was writing about. Then there is the tension from the past. The health issues that sent Dr. Conor Maguire across the world to avoid the constant reminders of what he thinks he can not have in life. The nurse Tamara Washington has a past history that had her face plastered in all the tabloids, her dignity and honesty were questioned, and she would rather hide from the world, and just focus on her job. But life does not always (rarely) go as we plan. The attraction Conor and Tamara have for each other draw them together, and the night had consequences. Now pregnant with Conor's baby, Tamara and Conor has to go through the emotional jungle that the life changing news of the baby causes them. At the same time, Tamara's pictures end up in the tabloids again, this time with Conor. And Conor has an another episode with a health scare while being interviewed to move to Australia... All this mayhem is something Conor and Tam have to deal with. And the conversations, the push and pull with their emotions, the angst that comes with all the changes they are facing, the burdens of their past, it's no wonder they are an emotional wreck. How they deal with all the havoc, how they manage with the chaos caused by the hurricane-force news they received, makes both of them look at their lives, look at themselves, grow and mature. And that development in their lives and in themselves is the story of Conor and Tam. It is realistic, there's no romantic pink glasses or magical solutions, but lots of work and compromising. It is hard, at times hurtful, but through all the mess they see each other. The feelings they have for each other grow, and they find love, peace, and home when they look into each other's eyes. This is one of those stories that makes me cheer 'love wins' at the end. A compelling, engaging, and refreshingly realistic yet attractively romantic and sweet story of growing to be the best possible version of you with the love and support of your surprising soulmate. ~ Four Spoons
The Most Dangerous Duke in London
by Madeline Hunter
Genre: Historical Romance
NOTORIOUS NOBLEMAN SEEKS REVENGE
Name and title: Adam Penrose, Duke of Stratton. Affiliation: London’s elite Society of Decadent Dukes. Family history: Scandalous. Personality traits: Dark and brooding, with a thirst for revenge. Ideal romantic partner: A woman of means, with beauty and brains, willing to live with reckless abandon. Desire: Clara Cheswick, gorgeous daughter of his family’s sworn enemy.
FAINT OF HEART NEED NOT APPLY
Clara may be the woman Adam wants, but there’s one problem: she’s far more interested in publishing her women’s journal than getting married—especially to a man said to be dead-set on vengeance. Though, with her nose for a story, Clara wonders if his desire for justice is sincere—along with his incredibly unnerving intention to be her husband. If her weak-kneed response to his kiss is any indication, falling for Adam clearly comes with a cost. But who knew courting danger could be such exhilarating fun?
Clara quickly read her morning mail while eating breakfast in Gifford House, the family’s London home. Two letters in particular received very brief attention.
Her grandmother had written a scold. I am told that you have refused to receive Stratton twice since you went up to London ten days ago. I must insist that you cease such provocations. Theo’s letter said much the same thing. We are unlikely to make progress with Stratton if you continue insulting him. Think of Emilia’s future. Think of mine. Surely you can find a modicum of gentility where he is concerned. She was thinking of Emilia’s future. And the family’s. This whole idea of bridging the divide between her family’s and Stratton’s struck her as ill-advised and disloyal. Let them try it if they wanted to, but she was not going to cooperate. Grandmamma knew that. It was why no one had told her about this plan before embarking on it. Donning her pelisse and her bonnet, she lifted a wrapped package and descended to the reception hall. Eschewing the family carriages, she told a footman to get her a hackney. She took some air on the portico while she waited. Unfortunately, while she did, a carriage pulled into the drive. She cursed under her breath. Stratton again. And here she was in plain view. She could hardly have the butler tell him she was not at home. On the other hand, it should be obvious she was leaving. A few polite words and he would be on his way. The duke stepped out of his carriage and approached her. After a greeting, he stopped with one foot on the lowest step of the portico and eyed her. “You go out a great deal.” “I may be in mourning, but I am not dead.” He gestured to his carriage. “Allow me to take you to your destination.” “Very kind of you, but my carriage is on its way.” “It may be some time before it arrives.” Indeed it might. With an inward groan of resignation, she turned to the house. “Since you have called on me, let us go inside and have a proper visit while I wait.” She led the way into the house and deposited her package in a footman’s hands. Up the stairs she led the duke, and into the drawing room. She perched herself on a chair and hoped she appeared at least half as formidable as her grandmother. The duke took a seat in the chair closest to hers and settled in comfortably. His hair had been styled since she last saw him on that hill. His now disheveled cropped locks brought more attention to his liquid dark eyes and to that sensual mouth and hard jaw. “It is kind of you to receive me, Lady Clara.” “Since you saw fit to report to my family that I did not receive you previously, I now feel obligated to pretend I am amenable to this inexplicable desire of theirs to form a friendship with you.” “You are a very direct woman.” “You are a most persistent man.” “Persistence in man is a virtue, while directness in a woman—” “Is a nuisance. Which begs the question of why you have bothered being so persistent with this nuisance of a woman.” “That is an excellent question. If you had seen me on my first call, by now you would have a full understanding of my intentions.” What an odd way to put it. Whatever his intentions were. “Perhaps you will enlighten me now, and quickly, so I can resume my own plans—plans which you have interrupted.” He laughed quietly, as if at a private joke. “Your brother called you shrewish. I can see why.” Shrewish? Why, that spoiled, disloyal boy. “I prefer being called direct. As a gentleman, I am sure you prefer that word too.” “Of course. Allow me to be direct in turn, so you can be about your day’s business.” He leaned forward and set his arms on his knees. It brought his fine face quite close to her. “You know your grandmother’s plan to have me marry Lady Emilia.” “I do.” “I have decided to decline the offer.” It was all she could do not to cheer with relief. Thank heavens someone in this sorry business was using some sense. “I have decided that you will suit me, and the dowager’s plan, much better.” A stillness rang in the chamber. It took a good long moment for her mind to absorb what he had said. Even then it sounded too bizarre to be accurate. “Your sister is too young for me, and whatever settlement is offered with her, it will never be as good as a wife with her own property and income.” Good heavens. She gathered her wits, but it took some serious groping through her stunned reaction. “Have you even met Emilia?” “No, but it does not signify. I am quite sure that while she is lovely, she is not the bride for me.” “How can you say that when you have not even—” “I know.” “You had better know differently, and quickly, because I am not available instead.” He sat back in his chair, not the least impressed by her definitive rejection. “It is understandable that you are surprised by my proposal. I am confident that you will come around, however.” Too agitated to sit, she stood and glared at the presumptuous idiot. Regrettably that brought him up too. Instead of what had been a satisfactory staring down, she now had to look far up at a face that hovered over her own. “I heard no proposal. I heard an edict. I cannot imagine what gives you cause to think I would obey it. You are the last man I would marry, should I marry at all. Indeed, my father would turn over in his grave if I even considered the idea. Now, sir, I thank you for your call, but I must be about my day’s business. Already I will be late.” She pivoted and strode out of the drawing room and down the stairs. She retrieved her package from the footman and headed outside. She sensed the duke on her heels the entire way. Her hackney coach waited behind the duke’s carriage. He gazed hard at that hackney. “Why are you not using the family’s equipage?” “I chose not to.” She descended the stone steps and aimed for her coach. He walked alongside her. “You are going to a secret assignation, I assume. One that you prefer the family servants not know about. There is no other explanation for using a hackney instead of a family carriage.” She truly wanted to hit him with her package for saying that within hearing of the footman waiting to hand her into the coach. She settled herself on the seat while the footman closed the door. The duke rested his forearm on the window’s edge and waited while the servant walked away. “I will not demand an explanation now,” he said. “However, if you are going to meet a man, that liaison must end immediately, now that we are engaged.” She stuck her face to the window. “We. Are. Not. Engaged.” She was almost yelling by the end of it, but the coach had rolled away by then, and only the air heard her. The rusted chains squeaked in rhythm with the swing’s low arc. Somewhere in the distance, a raven cawed. Leaves fluttered about in a crisp breeze, adding soft whispers to the existing melody. Davey sat and let momentum propel her higher, trying to quell the thunder inside her mind as she thought of how things used to be.
Palmer hadn’t taken her home. Davey would never allow that. Instead, he dropped her off at the old, abandoned home of a dead woman who everyone in town used to love. A trail in the backyard twisted through the woods for about a mile and then ended in Resting Pines, a trailer park containing over a dozen single-wide mobile homes all in desperate need of repair. Every day, just as dark started to fall, Davey abandoned her thoughts and the swing set to take the path to trailer number six. “Hello.” She hadn’t heard anyone walk up, so when the male voice called out the low greeting, Davey was startled. She turned around, saw the navy blue uniform, and almost bolted. Her eyes narrowed in recognition, but she didn’t relax. “No one’s breaking the law around here,” she said. “You can go away.” The cop kept walking toward her. His mirrored aviators hung from his shirt pocket, so this time, Davey could see his eyes. They were a deep grey and reminded her of a sky considering a heavy rain. He was fairly tall. It was easy to see that his uniform hid a well-muscled body, one that probably looked damn hot naked. Had Remington not represented the type of authority Davey loathed, she might have considered him good-looking. Losing interest, she turned in the swing. The cop was unwelcome, so Davey intended to ignore him. If he didn’t take the hint and go, she would. It was getting close to dark anyway. Again, his voice broke through her thoughts. “What is a creeper?” Davey started to spin around until she realized Remington was already in front of her. “Dude, what’s your problem?” “As of right now, all systems are functioning normally.” “You sound like a freaking robot.” Laughing easily, Remington crouched down. It put him below eye-level, since she was still sitting in the swing. “Sorry.” He ran a hand through a high-fade of thick, dark brown hair. “I’m straight out of officer training. Before that it was military school. I may seem a bit stiff at times.” Davey nodded slowly. “You’re a rookie.” “Yes.” “Great.” She pasted an unfriendly smile onto her face. “That’s exactly what this town needs.” “I sense you are being sarcastic.” “Wow. You’re probably going to make detective soon.” For a moment, his brow creased in confusion. Then Remington looked away. Davey regretted making fun of him. He really didn’t seem like a bad guy. “Look,” she said, “it’s nothing personal. Today has just been kind of tough. That’s all.” “Today has been rough for me as well. The department likes to have fun with the new kids.” Glancing at the sky, Davey stood up. It was time to go. Officer Remington got to his feet as well. His grey eyes held her in place. “I didn’t mean to disturb you.” She studied him for a long time. “A creeper is someone who does weird stuff like watch people sleep or bring up crazy stuff normal people wouldn’t talk about.” He grinned. “Or stares at someone for extended periods of time?” Maybe Remington wasn’t so clueless. Davey resisted the smile tugging at her mouth. “Yeah,” she replied shortly and started walking toward the trail. “What’s your name?” he called. Davey turned but kept walking backward. “If I meet you again, I’ll tell you.” She had no idea she would see Officer Remington again before the night ended.
