A TAIL AS OLD AS TIME…
Addison Turner has scripted a perfect future for herself, complete with a fairytale ending. She will become the name in doggie fashion design and live happily ever after with the husband of her dreams—and her dachshund, Princess, by her side. Just when her plan is on track and she’s gaining recognition at the local dog show, Addison is hit with some Oscar-worthy drama. A group of prize-winning show dogs are stolen from under her nose, and she’s stuck asking for help from Felix Vaughn, an infuriatingly hot bartender who is the exact opposite of Prince Charming. When more dogs go missing—and Felix becomes a suspect—the two team up to clear their names. Although Felix and Addison fight like cats and dogs, there’s an undeniable spark between them. And as the trail to the missing dogs heats up, so does their red-hot chemistry. Can Addison be persuaded to throw away her script to find an ending that just might be better than she ever expected?
With the vetting system I have for the books I read for a review, it rarely happens that I completely miss the target, but Beauty and the Wiener happen to be a miss for me. No, I didn't hate it. I read it, all 400 pages of it. It is well written, but the story just wasn't for me.
I love dogs as much as the next person, but the dog show and dog fashion clothing isn't something that I find a great interest in, and they play a center role in the story, more than I expected. There are lots of details in the story from the competitive world of dog shows, as well as about the accessories for the dogs, and about their grooming that I wasn't interested in. The mystery about the stolen dogs was cute, a little predictable, but it was interesting to see how Addison would nail the dognapper. Addison turned out to be a character that I had a hard time relating to or even like. She lived in an odd movie-induced delusional alternative reality with her obsession to find 'Mr. Perfect'. She was a bit of a snob when it came to Felix, the bartender, and together they acted in a surprisingly immature way time to time and again. Felix was sometimes considerate and kind, and other times cocky and flirty. I didn't get the connection between Addison and him, they mostly fought and bickered, never took the time to really get to know each other. But then again, Addison is dating someone else throughout the book, there's even an awkward makeout scene right in front of Felix... Yes, I know, and believe me, I am not trying to be mean or overly critical, just honestly telling you why I didn't connect with the story. I am actually in awe how I could have bombed so badly with the selection, and I take the blame for this because I do understand, and agree, that the book is well-written, if a little repetitive, there's humor in it, just not my kind, the cozy mystery was dainty, and I am sure there are readers who will love the dog show scenes and Addison's movie references, but unfortunately they missed a mark in me. ~ Two Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

The performance artist and con artist come together for the ultimate marriage of convenience.
Performance Artist, Argyle Brink, lives his life as one big art exhibit. No matter if he is hatching from a gilded egg to show his emergence as a new persona, or donning a suit of mirrors to reflect reality back to his audience, he never misses an opportunity to take a chance and stand by his convictions. Only one thing has eluded him…fame. In order to save her family’s estate, Malone Summersfield must never return to England. After conning an art critic into taking her across the pond as his fiancée, she thinks her life will be smooth sailing. However, when the man’s wife enters the picture, she realizes the con is all on her, and she needs to get married now. When the strange, yet handsome, performance artist offers to marry her for the price of co-starring in his reality show, she figures she’ll give it a go and become a living art piece. The show takes on a life of its own, gaining ratings from the sparks between the two stars. Airing everything from their dirty laundry, to public sex in an abandoned zoo, and even living off the grid in a micro house, nothing is off limits. However, when the INS decides to investigate their marriage further, and Argyle uses their predicament to broaden his art, Malone wonders if she will ever come first in his life. With their marriage, their show, and her citizenship at stake, the two must decide if the ultimate truth lies in the art or in their love.
Back at their loft, she caught his wrist before he slid the key into the lock.
He turned toward her, pressing his back to the door. “When you say my name my whole body responds.” “How so?” Part of her was never sure if he was serious or in a constant state of playing a role that he didn’t even realize. His gaze firmly on her face he held his hand out, palm up. “Put your hand on mine.” She did as he requested. “Do you ever wonder why there are five fingers?” He turned his attention to their hands together. “Is that all we needed? Would there have been a benefit to a sixth? Could we still have functioned with four?” Something about his words, the way he took in everything mesmerized her and she shook her head. “There’s something about holding hands.” As if it were a priceless vase he lifted her hand to his face. “A public sign of a union, but even when we’re alone I feel the need to hold your hand, have that connection to you. It’s intimate.” He dipped his head down and took his time kissing each one of her fingers. A jolt ran through each of her fingertips. How long were they going to play these games? “Argyle?” He gave her a quick glance then kissed her palm. Be it extreme need that came from being denied or just wanting her husband, her body flooded at the simple, yet passionate, act. “Oh.” Would he ever turn off whatever experiment or art project he thrust them into and make love to her? He slid his lips up to her wrist, giving her an open mouth kiss there before moving to her forearm. “Argyle.” Again she tried to figure out her husband. “Yes?” When he spoke his breath brushed against her skin, sensitizing her every one of her nerves. She couldn’t take much more of his teasing and she let out a moan. “Perhaps we should go inside.” He turned back to the door. “Are you joking?” She caught his arm. “I’m not one for much joking.” Once more he faced her. “However, if there is something you want, I’m sure that you will find it ready for the taking.” Done with the games, done with his cryptic words, and unwilling to go to sleep in a state of want one more night, she pushed him back, stood on her tiptoes and kissed him. She crushed her lips to his. However, while he opened his mouth and gave her access, he didn’t respond and she pulled back, the fire within her raging. What the hell was this? He wrapped his arm around her and pulled her tight against him. “Why don’t you kiss me, explore me and only worry about learning me rather than concentrating on conventions and how to hurry to some preconceived goal?” Unsure if this was one of his art works or what, she was left with no choice but to do as he requested. Again, she stood up on her toes, and this time rather than rush to kiss him, she caressed her mouth against his. Like before, he gave her complete access, his lips molded to hers and she kissed him, this time expecting nothing in return. She took the time to take each of his lips between her own, studying his taste, manly yet sweet, and she let her tongue explore his mouth. Between them, his erection grew, creating a large bulge that made her desire increase. Something about just kissing him, discovering him, and taking her time aroused her even more. By the time she pulled back, she was breathless as well speechless.

Part 6 of 8: an explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.
Going Rogue
When the Crisis Management Unit finally catch a break that may lead straight to their key suspect, Special Agent Lara Grant takes the bait he’s offered only to her. She’s ready to match wits with a madman if it means solving the case and stopping the bomber. But when her risky strategy of playing the lone wolf goes critically wrong, she wonders whether her willingness to do whatever it takes—alone—will prove to be the fatal choice…
In part six the Crisis Management Unit inner relationships are crumbling down. The stress of the long, desperate days of the endless search for the bomber is getting to them both mentally and physically. And now Special Agent Lara Grant let her temper flare, acted recklessly, and put everyone on the team in dire straits with their secrets and their future lives.
The confrontations are ugly and hurtful, the tension is palpable. Lara feels misunderstood, she tries to continue to work against the clock, but the damage control of the latest revelations disperse the team and The Whisperer gets Lara's personal attention. The plot twist takes the story into new, unexpected direction as Lara truly goes rogue. The turmoil in the team, the betrayal and let down they feel from Lara's actions is filled with dismay and anger. Yet the team doesn't even know the dangerous and selfish extent of Lara's lies and secrets. While I am enthralled by the hunt for the culprit, and the thrill of the chase, the intriguing revelations of Lara's personality, her talent as an agent, and her inability to work with others are starting to take the main focus. She is infuriating, frustrating, incredibly smart and capable while lacking some basic social skills that dishearten her co-workers and gives a new perspective on her actions, decisions, and to the tale, giving me the chills. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Part 5 of 8: an explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.
The hunter becomes the hunted
With just seconds to spare, Special Agent Lara Grant and the team manage to rescue a hostage. Victory! Thanks to this eyewitness, they now know the killer’s name, and might even have a lead on his next target. But not even the FBI’s best can protect everyone from the deadliest, and most dedicated, criminal. And when the entire CMU comes under attack, it’ll take a desperate act to keep the team together. Lara puts her own secrets—and her own life—on the line in an attempt to lure the bomber out of hiding and into the open…once and for all.
Finally, the CMU and Special Agent Lara Grant has a break in the case against the bomber named Whisperer. They not only have saved a life with only seconds to spare, but they have a name, they have an address, they have viable clues, they have a direction where to take the case, and they finally feel like they are one step ahead of the culprit. And that's when the team mentality breaks down.
In part five the case moves forward with a fast pace, and the information the team has in their hands stretches them even thinner than before as they are confirming the clues. Nick and Lara's already complicated relationship comes to an edge, as Lara's inability and willingness to work as a member of the team comes apparent. The completely different styles and approaches to work seem to pull them farther apart instead of enforcing them to work closer as partners. The raw underbelly of the team is showing, and liaison with the team dwindle. Lara's stubborn nature and temper are starting to show clearly, and are frustrating. The characters of the CMU team are showing a more vulnerable side of them in part five, with both the positive and the negative side of the human nature. The scenes are changing fast, the case is moving forward until it takes a move into a direction that can be the end of the team, thanks to Lara losing her temper. I have to give it to these four authors, the seamless work they have done with this serial novel is rather amazing. I have read books by all the four authors before and I can hear the distinct voice and style of each author as they each tell their part of the tale, yet the difference is barely there, like I previously said, more like looking at the same view with a step to another direction or with another focus on mind. The way the story is built forms a habit, a nearly an addiction, to get to know more, to find out not only about the case, but about the destinies and faith of the members of the team. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Part 4 of 8: an explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.
Everyone has secrets. Everyone is vulnerable.
As tensions mount within the Crisis Management Unit, Special Agent Lara Grant’s relationships with her fellow agents fray as they race to find a hostage taken by the bomber. But as the next high-profile target rejects the bomber’s demands, it seems like nothing can save the innocent victim. A chance bit of evidence leads the CMU to a warehouse Lara knows all too well from her last case. But will they arrive in time to prevent another murder?
All previous commitments to the weekend are now officially called off, I am so hooked and addicted to this story I need to find out what is going to happen and I have to binge on the rest of the novellas to do that. I need to find out that they will catch the Whisperer. I have to make sure no more people are going to die. But mostly, at the moment, I am concerned about the team members since the troops are crumbling and the pressure they are under is starting to affect them all. Will they survive as a team throughout the investigation? Are the secrets they are holding themselves going to eat them inside out? Is the fear of being targeted by the culprit going to give them more nightmares? Is Lara's past actually connected to the bomber?
The intensity of the story has been high since the first words of the serial novel. At Harlequin website, you can watch a video where the authors take turns to read the beginning of the first novella. As I watched it I had chills, literal chills going down my spine. And that has been the feeling as I have been reading the first four parts, the fervor of the investigation is immense. And it takes even deeper turn with the part four, as the team members begun to be affected personally by the case, and the confrontations are unavoidable. We get a indebt look at Nick in this part and with his personal revelations I actually felt the sadness of his heart, and the hopelessness his self-discovery brought on. The relationship between Nick and Lara is beyond 'complicated', the new unsteady balance of power with the team chipping away from the previously weak foundation they had managed to built. Most of the time as I read a novel I get deeply invested in the story, but the hook this serial has on me, the fixation I have with the characters, and the palpable danger, desperation, despair I sense from the novel is rare. I feel obsessed to continue reading the next novella ~ Five Spoons
Stand-alone Crossroads romance, complete with HEA—and plenty of heat and heart along the way!
Former Army Ranger and cyber security specialist Nate Holmes was a genius in all things computers. The sexy, muscled Adonis could fix any technical problem he was faced with, but when it came to matters of the heart, there was one issue he couldn’t face…how he felt about her… Eliza Young thought she’d put Harper’s Crossing in her rear view, but when a job opportunity opens up, the beautiful brunette is forced to return to her hometown and the setting of her unrequited first true love… He thought he’d missed his chance, she thought she'd never had one. After ten years, fate had finally reunited Nate and Eliza, but the question remains--what do you do when you get a chance to get it right this time? Will Nate have the courage and heart to claim her and…All He Desires...
A sensual and emotion-filled story of a new chance on forever kind of love and a future both Nate and Eliza had dreamed about since high school.
Even with the characters hesitation to believe in themselves when it came to the feelings, possibilities, and expectations between themselves, I adored both of them. Nate Holmes is smart, kind, considerate, a protective alpha male who's emotions and tender side comes front and center when Eliza Young walks into a room. Eliza is dedicated, absent minded, sweet, and endearing survivor of failed past relationships, two marriages, and determined to make it without a new relationship, until she sees Nate again. Like said, I adored Nate and Eliza, as individuals and especially together. The bond is strong, the connection palpable, the feelings between them are tangible. There were the shared memories, the sweet gestures, the undeniable passion they share that is documented in detailed, steaming hot love scenes. It seemed that the only hindrance to their happiness was the lack of communication, the misunderstandings and doubts are deep-rooted and without help from the grandmother, they might never have had the nerve to take the risk, to make it happen. The third person 'drama' with Nate's twin brother that Eliza dated in high school for three years, and the fact that Nate was in mutually beneficial yet emotionless friends with benefits relationship when Eliza comes back to town, and Bailey continues to be part of the circle of close friends was just at the edge of the 'oh no, you didn't' factor to me. That is just a personal preference when it comes to romance books. But the story was taken just to the rim without dipping over the peak for going too far when it comes to my personal enjoyment of a story. I revel in how the author manages to make each couple in the series unique and fresh, giving them an original, exclusive platform, making each story one-of-the-kind. The friends and families are tight, the emotions and desires are deep and honest, the adoration and devotion are sincere, the road to happiness and commitment are not without hindrance, but it is always a journey worth taking. I absolutely cherish these tales and the people I have met in them. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Part 3 of 8: an explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.
Under Attack The bomber’s latest threat has thrown the Crisis Management Unit into chaos! As Lara Grant struggles to hold her fractured team together, she discovers a possible connection between this case and her own past--something she can’t reveal to anyone, especially now. Because when the bomber’s next target chooses to keep his secret, terror turns to an intimate form of torture, and anyone’s past can be used against them...
As the Whisperer havoc the city, the team of FBI Crisis Management Unit is trying to hold it together. The exhaustion and weariness are in the air, the danger and threat are closer to them than before. They are not only physically sleep deprived but the mentality of the team is challenged as they now fight the forces both inside and outside of the FBI.
The power balance of the team is rattled, as is the edgy tightrope balance between Nick and Lara. A desperate moment causes them to act based on their emotions and oddly that breach of conduct seems to bring results. A new author takes the pen to continue the story, and I was fascinated by the seamless passing of the baton. It is as the story continues at same wavelength but the observer has taken a step, a little bit to the left, and the view of the tale changes just slightly, giving a new way to look at the invariable scene. For the first time, we get a glimpse of the Whisperer and his chilling, revengeful, twisted thoughts in his mind. The fact that most of the victims of the culprit seem to be connected, one way or the other, to the FBI's CMU is not only eerie but rather alarming fact. The darkness of the story, the horrifying results of a possible failure in the case, the strong characters alluring my mind with their determination and pure strength of will to continue and not to give up - the story has it's hook on me and I can't wait to continue the gripping tale. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
SILENT LITTLE WITNESS
Determined to question the ex-wife of a murder suspect, homicide detective Miles Callahan arrives just in time to save her and her daughter from a shooter. Leaving the scene of a crime goes against his training, but protecting Paige Olson and the little girl is more important than following the rules. But now, on the run with mother and child, Miles must figure out what happened to Paige's ex-husband…and why young Abby won't say a word. Her usually talkative child's silence has Paige worried. Is it possible she witnessed something while video chatting with her dad? If only they can convince the little girl to talk, then they might just break the case wide-open…and stop the killer who's stalking them at every turn.
I enjoyed the constant, deadly, fierce action that kept detective Miles Callahan on the run with Paige Olson and her little daughter Abby.
This story just mesmerized my mind and the attacks that just kept coming at them, no matter how well they hid from the culprits chasing them, left me breathless and made it impossible to even think about putting the book down until the case was closed. The characters are stellar in the story. Miles with his protectiveness and take charge attitude kept Paige and Abby physically safe, and with his kindness and tender caring made them feel secure as well. He won even Abby over, no matter of the trauma she had suffered, the connection between the little girl and Miles was endearing. Paige is a strong woman, she has learned to survive on her own, relying only on God's guidance and providence, but Miles gets through her shields and walls with his honesty, sincerity, and willingness to share his hurts from the past and the struggles with his faith in God. I loved that they prayed together, often and genuinely asking for God's protection as they run for their lives. The charming Callahan family, with their willingness to help and support the others, has won me over. The interactions between the siblings are delightful, and I am curious to find out about the destiny of the other family members. Laura Scott writes amazing suspense and action filled stories, where the characters battle not only with the criminals but with their future and their faith in God. The characters are solid and alluring, the romance is believable and sweet. Her books are a great balance between amiable and gloomy, and never had let me down with the intensity of the crimes and action or the tenderness of the courtship. Yes, I am enthralled! ~ Five Spoons

PROLOGUE
MIA I rolled out of bed, feeling unrested and sore and out of my mind with grief. It had been another rough night for me, one of many to come, I assumed. But what else could I do? You’ll find coffee. Then you’ll try to find a way to keep breathing. Because that was what widows did. As I stumbled toward my bedroom doorway to go check on the baby, the phone rang on my nightstand. The caller ID said Mack. “Hello?” “Mia, I don’t know how to say this, but he didn’t stay dead. He’s back, but he’s not him anymore.” “What?” I blinked. “Could you repeat that?” “King is back, Mia. And he made it clear he’s not letting me end 10 Club.” “I’ll call you,” I started hyperventilating, “back,” and passed out. CHAPTER ONE KING Tonight calls for a celebration. No, it is not a birthday nor an anniversary. Men like me do not give a dark fuck about life’s shitty little milestones. We care only for power or money—same fucking thing. And after tonight, I will have enough of both to break the fucking world. “Hey, baby,” says the topless bleach blonde rubbing her ass on my cock over my black slacks to the beat of the music, “I’m free after work.” “Shut up and keep dancing.” Women like her don’t come close to doing it for me, but she is the hottest, most expensive stripper in this private bar. A thousand dollars a minute. It’s pocket change to me; however, everyone here tonight now wonders why I’m treating myself. Just as I hoped. My eyes sweep the smoky, dimly lit bar filled with 10 Club members sitting at little tables, whispering in the shadows, making their deals and bartering for whatever sadistic crap will get them off tonight—sex slaves, drugs, torture, murder, whatever. Anything goes. Of course, they’re all talking about me, as well. I smile and take a long victory drag off my cigar, ceremoniously blowing the smoke into the air above. I want them all to see me gloating. I want them talking to the other degenerate 10 Club fucks and speculating what I am up to. Because regardless of what it is, they’ll all want to steal it from me. They’ll all want a piece. I’m counting on it. “That’s enough.” I push the blonde’s ass forward, rise from my seat, and straighten my blood red tie. I’ve done what I came for and can already hear the phones vibrating with speculation around the world at the hundred other 10 Club establishments like this one. “King is here.” “Something’s going down.” “What do you know and what’s the price?” they’re all saying. They’ll never guess. Not in a million years. I toss a thick roll of hundreds at the stripper, who goes on her hands and knees to fetch it from the floor. I can feel her lust-filled eyes on me as I step over her like the dog she is. After all, she’s 10 Club property, not even human in my eyes. But she made her choice. We all have. No one is part of this debauchery by accident. That’s not to say some aren’t backed into impossible corners, forced to choose between things such as death or becoming part of our secret society comprised of two levels—the powerful and the powerless. Make that three levels. Because there’s me. At the top. I stroll toward the set of heavy iron doors and make my exit into the dark alley. It’s raining and windy. Typical for a January in San Francisco. Personally, I like the somber feel of this weather—fits my mood. Dark as fuck. I am ten steps from my sleek black Mercedes when I hear footsteps splashing through puddles behind me. From the sound of the short strides, I know it’s a woman. Fucking idiot. Doesn’t she know I despise desperation? And I definitely don’t pay to fuck strippers who are owned by 10 Club. God only knows where that pussy’s been. I shake my head, pulling my keys from my pocket, and hit the unlock button on the remote. “Sorry, sweetheart. Not interested.” “You’re King, right?” The soft voice is unfamiliar, so I turn my head. She’s petite, blonde, and mildly interesting to look at; however, it’s hard to tell just how interesting since she’s wearing a garish yellow raincoat. “Who’s asking?” I say. “Yes or no,” she replies with a hint of a growl in her sweet voice. My, my. Aren’t we a demanding little thing? I decide to play along. Of course, she has no clue I can snap her neck with the twitch of my fingers. “Let us pretend for a moment that I have replied with a yes. What’s in it for me?” I ask. She steps closer, which definitely draws my attention. Most people fear me. They don’t know why, they often don’t even realize it, but they definitely fear me. This one doesn’t seem afraid. Either that or she’s too desperate to notice she’s in the presence of something black hearted. “They say you are the man who can find anything or anyone for a price,” she says. I like the way this conversation is moving. It means she wants something, and now that the streetlamp above has given me a better look at her luscious little lips, I’m fairly sure we can come to some sort of arrangement. I cock a brow, silently urging her to continue. “I-I need help finding someone.” Someone very important, I hope. Because I think I might like to add you to my collection. I collect many things, including people, although usually not for sex. I can get that without having to take on the responsibility of ownership. But for her, I might make an exception. Her wavy, shoulder-length blonde hair and wide blue eyes are at the top of my list when it comes to turn-ons, but what really gets me off are naivety and fearlessness. She has plenty of both. “Go on,” I say. “I want you to help me find my husband.” Tonight just got a whole hell of a lot more interesting. Because I love taking things that don’t belong to me, and I sure as hell love breaking a person’s soul. I dip my head to give her a good look. She should see the face of the man who will be fucking her for the next few years until I grow tired of her and trade her away to another club member, likely one of those sick fuckers who enjoys making lampshades from women’s legs and breasts. Like I said, anything goes in 10 Club, just as long as you’ve got ten billion in the bank and money to pay your dues—one billion a year—which buys you complete immunity from any government anywhere in the world. Of course, we own all the governments. How do you think so many sadistic pricks make it into office? Power and money are everything. I lean down and let her drink in my dark features. Yes, look into my eyes, sweetheart. See the promise of suffering in their cold gray depths. But as I stare back at her, there’s nothing. No fear in her eyes. No sadness or desperation. She’s void of all emotion. Tonight just got a whole hell of a lot less interesting. It’s no fun for me if they’re already broken. “Sorry. I’m busy.” I turn away and pop open the driver-side door. “Wait. Aren’t you going to help me?” “I could,” I say blandly, sliding into the cool leather of the driver’s seat, “however, as you’ve pointed out, I am the man who can find anyone or anything for a price. You don’t have anything I want.” She wedges herself between me and the car door I’m about to close. “Name it. Name your price, King.” She grabs my shoulder and my groin floods with heated lust. Is it because she’s not the least bit afraid and should be? Probably. Like I said, fearlessness and naivety make my dick hard. I look up at her, deciding to make an offer though I would probably be better off going home to enjoy a bottle of expensive scotch and prepare for my dinner party. No. I won’t be cooking or cleaning. I have slaves for such mundane bullcrap. This preparation is something else entirely. “My price is you,” I say, thinking she might make an interesting toy. She doesn’t bat an eyelash, which is surprising. They usually look a little offended or shocked when I tell them I’d like to own them. “No deal,” she says. I shrug and start the engine. “Then I’m afraid we must part ways. Good luck finding him.” “I have money. A lot of money.” “Not interested.” I’m already obscenely wealthy and will soon have the kinds of funds that make or break GDPs of first world countries. Whatever cash she’s got is a pittance. I give her a push and send her stumbling back so I can close the door. “Wait!” She gets her footing straightened out and comes at me again. I almost admire her persistence. Almost. “I have a ring,” she announces. “I’m told it can keep a person from dying.” I push back on the heavy door to prevent it from slamming into her. She’s got my attention. A man like me is always interested in items that bring back the dead or prevent people from dying once I do. Especially now. I turn off the engine, slowly step from the car, and look down at her as she shrinks back a few feet. That’s when I notice something’s different about her. The light doesn’t quite touch her, but instead reflects off a nearly undetectable sheen of energy surrounding her. And we’re back to a very interesting evening, indeed. People like her are rare. In fact, they are nearly extinct. I might have had something to do with that, but what can I say? In my younger years, I wasn’t a fan of her people. “How did you come about such an object?” I ask. She lifts her delicate chin defiantly. I fucking love it. She’s dancing with the devil and showing such bravery. “None of your business.” Such bravado. I chuckle. “All right then, how do you know it works?” “I just know. Do we have a deal? Yes or no, King.” That sounds like something I might say, so I appreciate it. “I confess I am intrigued; therefore I will say yes. However, I should warn you that welshers are shown no mercy. If you do not deliver, for any reason, you will belong to me, and I won’t be kind.” The woman freezes. Ah, there it is. Fear. My black heart tingles with delight. Now we are getting somewhere. “I won’t back out,” she says. “And the ring will work.” “Very good.” I slide a card from the inside pocket of my coat and hand it over. “Be here tomorrow night at eight. I’m throwing a dinner party.” “I-I don’t understand.” “I’m a busy man. You want me to find your missing husband, then we work when and where I say. That’s the deal. Take it or leave it.” Of course, that’s a complete lie. I have no intention of helping her, but she will most certainly be useful to me. In fact, she’s exactly what I’ve been needing. Saves me the trouble of having to kill my brother’s woman. For now. She nods in compliance. “Very good. And don’t be late. Ever.” I return to my car, close the door, and restart the engine, realizing that she’s simply standing there staring at me and that I’ve forgotten something. I lower the window. “What’s your name?” She suddenly looks like someone has punched her in the stomach—a pained stillness in her face, and shoulders hunched forward like she wants to be sick. I’m guessing it’s all sinking in. Yes, sweetheart, you’ve just made a deal with the devil. Actually, I’m worse. A thousand times over. There is no divine creation in my past. No possibility of regaining my wings. I am the sort of man who makes this world a horrible place to live in. Not even death dares to fuck with me. I look at the little woman, wondering what the hell she’s waiting for. “Well?” “Mia. My name is Mia Turner.”

Part 2 of 8: An explosive new installment in the thrilling FBI serial from New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy and Tyler Anne Snell, Emmy Curtis and Janie Crouch.
Witness to a Murder?
The Crisis Management Unit has a confession--and a dead suspect. Could this mean the end of the bombing spree that's terrorized New York? Special Agent Lara Grant's instincts tell her that the danger has only just begun. And sure enough, the carnage continues as the bomber eludes them at every turn. Lara is just beginning to investigate a man taking selfies at each of the bomb sites when, suddenly, another CMU agent becomes a target...
Reading, or at least reviewing, a serial novel with one part at the time is much harder than I thought. Yet after reading the part two to the novel, I admit, it's official, I'm hooked. I got so immersed in the story I might have yelled 'NO' when I realized the part two was over. Yes, I have the next part downloaded, but that is beyond the point.
The FBI Crisis Management Unit has finally found some clues to the recent bombings that might give leads to the terrorist. Unfortunately, those clues come to their own doorsteps, as a family member of the team is oddly claiming responsibility. Nothing seems to be fitting, and the frustration of the situation is palpable. The events at the crime scene bring Agent Lara Grant's own previous personal nightmares into her mind, and her mother's over twenty-year-old murder case gets a new lead, that has Lara on the edge, and losing more sleep. In this installment, the members of the team seem easier to approach, not soft by any means, but the compassion and understandable fear and worry in the air gave them a new, more humane side. The intensity is still as fierce, the danger and horrific possibilities of new bombings a constant thought in the minds of the agents. Can James' brother be behind the bombing? And what is the midnight emergency meeting all about? The cliffhanger at the end of the part two is riveting and unexpected, puts a completely new spin on the story and to the evidence so far collected, getting me hooked in an intoxicating way. Carla Cassidy did an amazing job with the parts one and two, can't wait to read the next part that is written by Tyler Anne Snell ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
"You and me are a bad idea, Hollywood."
She's a former beauty queen, former reality TV star and the former wife of a former Sexiest Man Alive. And now Bree Mathews has been forced into hiding on this godforsaken farm in the middle of Nowhere, North Carolina...all because some deranged stalker wants her dead. That grumpy farmer next door isn't enough to chase her back to Malibu, even with his dark and scary PTSD episodes from his army days and his lack of respect for all things Hollywood. Always up to a challenge, she sets out to prove to Cole "Plowboy" Caldwell that you can never judge a celebrity on the lam by her cover!
Oh my, all the emotions that this story brings forward just nearly burst my heart and it was impossible not to make a commitment in my mind to do anything I can, to work to better the world that awaits veterans when they arrive back home after their service.
But have no fear, this story is not filled with angst and turmoil, even though both of those emotions are involved. But the author has managed to intertwine joy and humor in a subtle way even to the direst scenes where your heart is aching to the characters, you have tears in your eyes, yet you are smiling because, in midst of it all, there's pride, bliss, and wonder of life. Bree Mathews comes through a transformation that can only be admired. Though she is completely out of her element and comfort zone, she makes the best of it, is open to the changes in her and around her, and flourish as the story unfolds. Yes, it took a little push from her new friends to get her towards the right direction, but resistance was minimal, and the whining just token. Cole Caldwell really won my heart. With his broken soul, he still tries so hard to fit into the old life, he tries to find the peace of his mind, yet the PTSD is making a havoc and no matter what he tries, there's no stopping it, there's no calm in his mind. I loved the unity and support of the military brothers, as well as Cole's family and friends. The PTSD affected all their lives, and they were all willing to make the sacrifices it would take for Cole to get better. The connection between Cole and Bree was tangible. I laughed with them at their banter and play, I swooned from the intense passion their shared, I was in tears from the torment and hurt they had to go through, and I cheered for them to find their 'home', their place in the world, their peace of mind, and ability to move on with life. I love it when a book takes you on a journey you were not expecting. When it takes you into the dark, deep, muddy waters where you have to stop and take a breath. Where it makes you want to stand up and make a difference. This story is definitely worth losing some sleep over, the impact it made on me will carry on and will make me take action. I adore books that influence or challenge my view of the world and this one surely accomplished just that. To be read with an open mind and heart to let the message register... ~ Five Spoons
Rolf’s Quest
A Medieval Encounter #1 By: Aubrey Wynne Releasing February 1, 2017 Plato Publishing
A wizard, a curse, a fated love…
When Rolf finally discovers the woman who can end the curse that has plagued his family for centuries, she is already betrothed. Time is running out for the royal wizard of King Henry II. If he cannot find true love without the use of magic, his line will end. Melissa is intrigued by the mystical, handsome man who haunts her by night and tempts her by day. His bizarre tale of Merlin, enchantments, and finding genuine love has her questioning his sanity and her heart. From the moment Melissa stepped from his dreams and into his arms, Rolf knew she was his destiny. Now, he will not only battle against time and a powerful duke, but defy his king and the gods to save her. England 1154 The woods were dim with the day nearly at an end. They would not reach the next town before dark. She picked up her heavy skirts and walked farther into the trees; the quiet and solitude wrapped around her like a balm. Her horse followed, snatching at a random leaf that still clung to a branch. Common sense told her to turn around, but a noise—no, a song —floated over the stillness. Without thought, Melissa moved toward the sound. She approached the edge of the forest and stopped just behind a large oak. A man stood on a hill, beckoning to someone or something. His voice captured her, bound her to the spot, and her eyes fixed on the scene. Silhouetted against the blood–orange sun sinking into the horizon, the dark, powerfully built figure slowly raised his right arm toward the evening sky. The sides of his mantle fluttered in the autumn breeze as a hawk screeched in answer. He raised his left arm, and the howl of wolves echoed through the air in obedient response. A sudden gust of air swirled the black, heavy cloak around the legs of the man, sending leaves flying about his feet as if they were commanded to dance. Melissa watched from behind the tree and held her breath, for fear of being discovered. His resonant voice rose in a chant that captivated, then soothed. It spoke to her, beckoned her. She clutched at the rough tree bark to resist the physical pull. Then the chant abruptly ceased. His head snapped around and golden eyes locked onto hers. His gaze seemed to pierce her very soul, and her body pulsed with excitement as he pushed back the hood, exposing raven hair and the chiseled features of an extraordinarily handsome face. The rising moon glinted off his chain mail, his hand now resting on his sword hilt. She gasped, her gaze transfixed on the most magnificent creature she had ever seen. Distant voices threatened to encroach upon this moment of fate. She pushed the sound to the back of her mind and focused only on the mysterious man in front of her. The urge to move closer overwhelmed her, and she stepped away from the shelter of the tree. Her feet moved of their own will, and her arms reached out to this stranger who now filled her with an intense need. The voices behind her grew louder. Footsteps rustled dead leaves and brush, intruding on the enchantment. Her mind, not yet ready to let him go, struggled to stay in his world. But the mystical influence receded, and she knew he had released his hold over her. An inexplicable emptiness took its place. Melissa reluctantly turned toward the commotion behind her, certain he would be gone when she looked back over her shoulder. Would she see him again? Her father had spoken of a wizard rumored to have the ear of the king. Her mind a tangle of unexplained questions, she bowed her head and attempted a look of repentance as her father approached. “Daughter! What were you thinking to wander off alone?” She heard more worry in his tone than anger. “These are hard times. I fear too many thieves lurk near the main roads.” “Yea, my lord.” The relief on his face caused her to regret the impulse for a moment of privacy. She cast one last glance at the hill but spied only a single hawk, circling low. The bird landed on a nearby branch, observing the group. As Melissa admired its beauty, her heart raced. One hand covered her chest as her eyes locked onto a pair of golden ones. It cannot be him. Unless... The bird seemed to read her thoughts. With one sharp cry, the winged creature took flight and disappeared over the trees. She reached out to stop him, but he vanished into the night.

Shielded by the Cowboy SEAL
SOS Agency #2 By: Bonnie Vanak Releasing February 1, 2017 Harlequin
The SOS Agency grants one Navy SEAL his most personal mission yet
Home on leave at his family farm, Navy SEAL Cooper Johnson receives an unexpected assignment: to protect a beautiful socialite on the run from her abusive ex. Grieving his kid sister, a brave cop killed in the line of duty due to a faulty bulletproof vest, Coop is in no mood for work until he meets Meg Taylor. Soon, he finds that riding the land, lovely Meg safe beside him, is a surprising comfort to his heart. But when he discovers Meg's dark past and the evidence she possesses that her ex would kill to keep buried it will take both the cowboy and SEAL within him to get the ultimate justice.
Shielded by the Cowboy SEAL is a rapidly unfolding story filled with suspense, danger, and threat mixed with ardent attraction and tender adoration that melted my heart.
Navy SEAL Cooper Johnson is as alpha male as they come. He is protective, loyal, tough, and fierce, with a streak of a tender side when it comes to his loved ones and the animals in his care. He is not perfect, making him even more lovable, his temper is on a tight lease, his judgement might come quickly at times, but his heart is broken from the loss of his sister, and trying to make sense of the current events happening on the ranch, not to mention the woman trusted to his care, his world has been turned upside down while the whole family has been put into a danger. Meg Taylor's fate in life hasn't been easy. She is running for her life from a soon to be ex-husband, guilt from the mishandlings with her company her driving force. All she ever wanted was to be loved, yet that seemed to escape her fingers time after time. She knows the threat to her life, yet she isn't aware of the extent of it, or how deadly the force after her truly is. Meg has courage and grit, she is a strong woman with a tender heart with bruised body and soul. Meg and Cooper together made me swoon. They are scorching hot together, they melt the pages with the passion they share, yet the tenderness between them, the understanding, the support, the protectiveness, it was adorable and so sweet. There's a lot of facts and events that could have hindered them to ever to be together, yet they find forgiveness and compassion inside themselves and with each other at the direst times. This story was easy to immerse to, get lost in it and the constant danger lurking around. The captivating cast of the characters charmed me with their kindness, toughness, and affection to each other, definitely an intriguing series to be followed! ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side
Such delicious warmth.
Meg slowly opened her eyes. She’d been back at the car, Sophie curled beside her, wondering how they would survive the storm and not freeze to death. The cold had pierced her bones like icy knives. And then she’d closed her eyes, trying to keep her dog warm by holding Sophie tight. The nightmare had been too real. Sophie, kicked out of the house by her husband, wandering the streets during a south Florida cold snap. Curling up in a doorway to stay warm, whimpering and afraid, confused as to why her owners had abandoned her… She drove, as she had in the past when it really happened, searching the streets for her beloved dog. But this time during the nightmare, a handsome stranger picked Sophie into his arms and scowled at Meg, as if blaming her for Sophie’s condition. Now as she stirred, she became aware of lying in a warm bed, blankets piled atop her. A lamp glowed softly on a nightstand. Meg realized she wore only panties and a bra. And in addition to being half-naked, there was a hard male body next to her, also half-naked. Panic swept through her. She startled and moved away, but a strong, muscled arm hooked around her waist. “Relax,” a deep male voice said. “You’re not going anywhere.” The voice was strange, tinged with amusement and a New England accent. The body belonging to that accent was hardened with thick muscle, not soft with fat like Prescott’s. She became aware of the scent of him, all cedar and spicy aftershave, a pleasing masculine smell, not the fancy and expensive cologne disguising the vodka Prescott had consumed far too much lately. “Get away from me,” she mumbled. “Why are you doing this? “No one dies on my watch, Princess, and you were entering hypothermia. Body heat is the best way of keeping warm. I daresay your little dog knows this, otherwise she’d be nipping at my toes instead of snuggled beneath them.” He added, with a wry sound, “And if you got frostbite, the local doc would have to amputate those pretty pink toes of yours.” She had to get out of here, but oh, the warmth beneath the blankets and the firm, muscled body beside her gave off heat like a blast furnace. Meg blinked hard, trying to summon precious energy. “Her name is Sophie.” “Should have called her Ouchie.” Meg’s mushy brain couldn’t register the joke, until she lifted her head and saw her rescuer hold up his hand where a half moon marked the skin. “Bit clean through my glove.” “Oh no! I’m so sorry.” Mortified, she struggled to sit up, more concerned about her dog biting a total stranger who had saved them from death than her lack of clothing. He pushed her down. “Easy now. You need to stay under these covers a while longer.” “My dog…” “No worries,” he said easily. “I trust she’s had her shots, and I’ve had mine, so you needn’t worry about your furball getting a disease.” Meg realized he was joking. The tension gripping her sore, tight muscles eased a little. She peered upward to get a closer look at him. A thick shock of wavy dark brown hair was cropped short. He had an intense gaze, thin cheekbones and a wide mouth. Handsome, with a hint of Irish blood in those ice-blue eyes. A dusting of black hair covered his muscled chest. Washboard abs rippled beneath smooth, tanned skin. He was mouthwatering, a prime example of masculinity. Meg stared, still struggling with the unreality that this man had rescued her from the cold and warmed her with his body. “You’re Cooper Johnson?” “The one and only,” he drawled. “Your host over the next several days.” She pulled the blankets up to cover her breasts, well aware her lacy red bra provided thin covering in the chill, and her nipples had turned rigid. From the cold. Not the pull of attraction toward this handsome stranger. It didn’t matter if her libido sat up and started shimmying. All she had to do was think of what Prescott would do if he found her, and her heated blood turned to ice. “Where’s Sophie?” Cooper lifted the bottom of the blankets. Snuggled at his feet, wedged partly beneath the covers, her dog snoozed. Relief filled Meg. She tossed back the covers, climbed down the length of the bed and gathered her dog into her arms, checking her over anxiously. “She seems okay.” Meg drew in a deep breath as the awakening Sophie licked her face. Sheer male interest flared on Cooper’s face. He rearranged the blankets around his waist. Realizing he must have had a bull’s-eye glimpse of her rear end, Meg flushed. She clutched the dog just a little too tightly, and Sophie squirmed. The interest faded as his expression shuttered. He scratched the bristles on his hard jaw. “You feeling okay now, Princess?” At her nod, he flung back the blankets, displaying a pair of long, muscled legs. A dusting of hair didn’t hide a wicked-looking scar on his left thigh. Her fascinated gaze traveled upward to the black Jockeys he wore… And the very large bulge beneath them showing a blatant male reaction. Seems as if Cooper Johnson was equally attracted to her. Not that she’d do anything about it. Not in her lifetime. His mouth curved into a knowing smile as he reached down to the floor, retrieved a pair of jeans. Cooper slid into them and stood, buckling the belt. “Had to get you warm. Can’t help the consequences. I’m a guy, and you’re a very attractive woman.” He shoved a hand through his thick hair and the move flexed the biceps of his right arm. A tattoo of a snake writhed with the motion as well. Sailors got inked, from what she knew. And he was a Navy SEAL. Not regular Army, like her brother had been. SEALs were tough, Lacey had told her, but their missions and lives were shrouded in secrecy. She wondered what happened to him that he was here now with her.
